Azerbaijan Carpet Museum

You arrive first at the building — a folded, rolled-carpet silhouette on Baku’s waterfront that announces itself before you step inside. The galleries are calm, deliberate and spare of gimmickry; carpets are treated like books, each one a chapter of region, clan and technique. Wander three floors from traditional pile rugs of the 17th–19th centuries to contemporary studio pieces, and you’ll often find a woman at a loom quietly weaving the present into the past. It’s where Azerbaijan explains itself through pattern and color — locals consider it a national archive, tourists treat it as a must-see, and both come away with the same surprise: these are not mere floor coverings but maps of memory. Small conveniences — a souvenir shop and a coffee corner — make it easy to linger. If you care about craft, identity or architecture, this museum rewards patience; if not, admire the exterior and stroll the promenade, but you’ll miss the long conversation woven into the rooms.
