Horsetooth Falls

Horsetooth Falls feels like Fort Collins’ backyard waterfall: raw, efficient and honest. The trail threads through foothill scrub and narrow singletrack, then dumps you into steep rock steps and muddy spring patches. A roughly three-mile loop gives you both rim and basin access, but the best perspective is down below where the cascade reads larger and more dramatic. The parking lot is small and requires a day pass, so expect mornings and weekdays to be quieter. Parts of the route are shared with horses and bikes while steeper stretches are hikers-only, making the hike a mix of easy family sections and short technical pitches where toddlers go into carriers. Waterflow is a seasonally fickle thing—spectacular on snowmelt, reduced by late summer, and sometimes rimmed with ice in winter. This is not a curated attraction; it’s a working trail that stitches Fort Collins to the Front Range, a place locals use to knock the city off their shoulders and remind themselves what real Colorado looks like.
