Gobustan Mud Volcano

Out on the cracked flats outside Baku, Gobustan’s mud volcanoes are an unapologetic piece of Earth’s plumbing — small bubbling cones that pop methane and, once in a while, a two‑metre crater that looks positively monstrous next to the pinprick mounds. The site is raw and windblown, a short bumpy run from the Gobustan rock‑art entrance that ends at a scatter of steaming mud and the odd local driver ready to barter a lift. There’s a modest fossil museum nearby and park signage that hints at official protection, but the real theatre is hands‑on: drivers will sometimes light the gas for a flame demonstration and kids crowd the edges to poke at cool, wet earth. Visitors come for geology and photography, locals for the side‑income the steady trickle of day‑trippers brings. It’s not polished, and some will find the drive and the small scale underwhelming, but for those who like their attractions a little wild and a little inconvenient, Gobustan delivers a memorable and oddly intimate encounter with the planet.
